Abstract

This study is based on observations recorded in a class of three year-old children at City and Country School in New York City during the school year 1991-92. The observations describe the children's work/play with the unit blocks. It is a study of how the children interact with the material and how this interaction supports their physical investigation of the material as well as their dramatic play. The teacher's role in supporting experimentation and dramatic play through block building is also discussed. The work of Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Lev Vygotsky, John Dewey and Caroline Pratt provide a theoretical framework for this study.
