Abstract
This independent study will be focusing on children’s literature and the themes and messages that they provide for young readers. I have written an original piece that instills an important value about finding identity and recognizing one’s significance, while also incorporating visuals and rhymes to invite a young audience into the text. I will be researching children’s books that share a similar purpose in helping young children understand who they are by also highlighting the ways in which we are each different. I will find categories that my book may belong into, as well as identify themes, writing styles, and trends that I notice in each story. As this is my final Bank Street project, I will be using the knowledge that these last three years have offered. I will be incorporating my understanding on early childhood development by including books and references from early childhood psychologists, language specialists, and children’s literature experts. I will analyze the appropriateness of particular books for children based on their age level and their social-emotional, cognitive, and language development. In addition to using textbooks and journals to understand children’s literature, I will also be reading my book to a group of children and analyzing the experience. I will be identifying what went well and what did not; what could be changed, or what should remain the same, what techniques could be used to scaffold and finally, how can this book be applied to a classroom setting?
