Abstract
This paper describes the process of researching, creating, sharing, and reflecting on a picture book that features two New York City siblings engaging in imaginary play at the playground. The paper begins by discussing the rationale behind creating such a story. It shares some of the research supporting the benefits of imaginary play and discusses the intended age range the book was created for in the child development section. The paper goes on to highlight the inspirational texts that influenced the story in a children’s literature review. After this, the original material is shared.
The story, Imagine, is about two siblings who find out they are visiting their Abuela. Along the way, they plan for the game “Monsters” by discussing their age, magical powers, and backstory. When they arrive at the playground, the imagine themselves in a whole other world. This play continues until it is time to go home. The story ends with a trip to their aunt’s house in Pennsylvania, where they plan a whole new game of “Monsters.”
After the original material is shared, the paper goes on to describe the application of the material, in which the book was shared with a group of third graders. It discusses their reactions to the content. Finally, the paper ends in a reflection of the whole process, and the theme of the book.
