Abstract

The author asserts that it’s time for us to “measure” schools by the values we believe in for public life in general, and to “measure” our students, then, by the long-term impact they will have on our larger society and the vitality of our democracy.

Author Biography

Deborah Meier has spent 45 years in urban public schools as a kindergarten teacher and principal, K-12; she is also author of The Power of Their Ideas and many other books, a founding member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, and a MacArthur Fellow.
