"Normalizing the Need For Help" by Nancy Gropper

Abstract

Gropper recalls her need for support when she first joined the graduate faculty at Bank Street College as a Supervised Fieldwork advisor. She explores the connections between her own most recent experiences as a newcomer and what all new teachers need in order to succeed - teacher support. This article describes critical components of a teacher support program, referencing the methods of the New Educators Support Team (NEST).

Author Biography

Nancy Gropper is a member of the Graduate School faculty at Bank Street College of Education, where she currently serves as Director of the Pre-service Program in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She has worked as an evaluator for a variety of educational projects, and has conducted research on gender issues at the early childhood level. She received a doctorate in Early Childhood Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
