Nelsen argues that the loss of play has unwittingly provoked a loss of critical thinking and civic engagement.

Author Biography

Peter J. Nelsen was a high school English teacher, adventure educator, and alternative high school director before earning his Master's degree in experiential education and then his PhD in philosophy of education at the University of New Hampshire. As assistant professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, he teaches philosophical foundations of education. His current academic interests include the epistemological and moral dimensions of schooling, focused on social justice.
