In this article we describe and analyze the process first grade teachers used as they guided their students to investigate a place in their school community called “the Theater District,” an important industry in the neighborhood.
Author Biography
Bryan Andes has been working as a K/1 teacher at P.S. 212 for the past 15 years. He received his BS in early childhood education from New York University in 2000, graduating with honors, and his MS in reading and literacy education from Bank Street College of Education in 2003. At P.S. 212, he continues to develop one-of-a-kind social studies curriculums, which have been presented at schools across New York City as well as at the 97th annual NCTE conference. In 2006 he created the K/1 social studies curriculum for Community Roots Charter School in Brooklyn.
